He has also been active in the academic community and has contributed to the development of Luleå University of Technology. He was the Chair of the Board of Luleå University of Technology between 2004 and 2010, and was in 2020 appointed Chair of our External Committee with the mission to identify new collaborative partners and increase the University’s external funding. It is into northern Sweden that he has put all his energy when it comes to the development of trade and industry – and he sees himself as an entrepreneur.
The youngest Municipal Commissioner in Sweden
Anders Sundström was born in 1952 in Hudiksvall, grew up in Piteå and studied among other things human geography at Umeå University. He has also studied at Luleå University of Technology. He was the youngest Municipal Commissioner in Sweden, when he, 28 years old, became the Municipal Commissioner in Piteå, a post that he held until 1994. In the 90s, he held the government posts Minister for Employment, Minister for Business, Industry and Innovation and Minister for Health and Social Affairs, and he has also been a Member of the Swedish Riksdag. He was asked to be the Chair of the Swedish Social Democratic Party after Håkan Juholt but declined.
Important industrial initiatives thanks to Luleå University of Technology
Among other things, Anders Sundström has been Chief Executive of Pitedalens Sparbank and of Folksam, where he also was Group Chief Executive. He has also been Chair of the Board of Directors of Swedbank. Since 2018, he has been Chair of the Board of Directors of Kaunis Iron. Ever since the 70s, the industry map has changed in Sweden.
