How to capture the carbon from combustion of solid fuels

Even with a massive introduction of renewable energy into the power and energy intensive industries, carbon capture and storage (CCS) will have to account for a significant fraction of the carbon emission reductions required to reach the UN climate goals. The main source of carbon emissions from these industries is combustion of fossil fuels. There are several routes to capture the carbon dioxide resulting from the combustion processes, but they are all associated with some energy penalty. Nils E Haugen, new adjunct professor in Energy Engineering, talks about the most relevant carbon capture routes, as well as the challenges and benefits associated with some particularly interesting capture technologies.
