This lecture is cancelled and will be held in the autumn of 2021.

Satellites and space applications are part of our daily life - even if we don’t notice - but places where space engineering and research are performed are rare. René Laufer, new professor in Onboard Space Systems, will in his lecture describe why Norrbotten is a space place, which space activities are taking place right now and how much more exciting activities we can expect in the near future.

Staff and faculty members at Luleå University of Technology in Kiruna teach and perform research focusing on many areas linked to space science and technology, atmospheric research, nano satellites, rocket propulsion, spacecraft design, or asteroid engineering. Joint collaboration of the university with the national Institute of Space Physics, Swedish Space Corporation’s rocket launch site and test center Esrange, but also with many small and medium size companies, make Norrbotton – and Kiruna in particular – one of the rare but real space places. The lecture will show the local activities as well as the global connections of current and planned future space activities in the region and answers the question – how far away is space?
