Annelie Hedström discovered her research subject as early as 1994, when she came into contact with the course water treatment technology during her undergraduate education. It was the most intellectually challenging course that really felt like real engineering - after that she was stuck. Thanks to her creativity, perseverance and ability to get things done, she has many years of successful research in water and sewage technology behind her.

In her research, Annelie focuses on sewage issues: how to clean the sewage, how to get the resources out there in the sewage and how to build the infrastructure required to take care of the sewage with as little resource consumption as possible. She is extra proud of the 10-year project Dag & Nät, where the research group at Luleå University of Technology collaborates with a number of municipalities in Sweden to meet tomorrow's environmental requirements when it comes to stormwater and pipe networks. Among other things, she works with systems analysis where she says that we must become better at taking into account many different aspects to achieve the best results, for example when we design our sewerage networks or how we should utilize nutrients from the sewer.

Her main driving force is to develop new knowledge, to find new methods and working methods for us in society to become better at taking care of our sewers. She wants her research to make an impression in the building of society, make the sewers more sustainable and that it should contribute to necessary changes in legislation.

Annelie was born in 1972 in Ånäset, Västerbotten. She defended her dissertation in 2006 at Luleå University of Technology with a dissertation in VA technology where she looked at how we can use reactive filter materials to purify and recycle nitrogen and phosphorus from sewage. In her spare time, she relaxes with outdoor activities and gardening in the cottage.
