30-year research collaboration behind new super factory

Published: 1 February 2018

Lindbäcks Bygg has opened the doors to Europe's most modern factory for industrial and sustainable construction at Haraholmen in Piteå. The factory produces 1700 apartments per year and creates 200 new jobs. Behind the innovative technology in the production line is a 30-year collaboration with Luleå University of Technology.

- In the early 1990s, there was a crisis in the company. We went from 100 to 25 employees in half a year. We approached Luleå University of Technology to see if we could turn around. We were not interested in cooperation, but it was the survival of the company, said Stefan Lindbäck.

Today, the company overrides about three percent of its revenue to research and development. Strategic development and innovation have become the keywords for the company that is today the market leader in its industry. The collaboration has also given research to flourish.

- This year we were ranked fourth in the world as a research group in what we are dealing with. It is a receipt that our research is at the forefront, said Lars Stehn, professor at the Department of Industrial and Sustainable Construction at Luleå University of Technology.
