An important part of mining related research at the university is about environmental issues. At the workshop, researchers and graduate students in the research subjects Applied Geochemistry and Soil Mechanics presented their research on waste management, water management and dam construction.
"It was positive that the workshop attracted so much interest with approximately 70 participants from the mining industry, public authorities, consultants, and researchers", says Björn Öhlander, Professor in Applied Geochemistry at Luleå University of Technology.
The workshop was organized by the work package Environment within CAMM2 (Centre of Advanced Mining and Metallurgy) at Luleå University of Technology. The workshop is aimed primarily at participants from Sweden and fills a need for discussion of research on mining and the environment in addition to international conferences. This was the first time for WELCAMM but it will become an annual workshop.
