The composition of today's gasoline and diesel is largely defined by the crude oil composition. In a fossil-free energy system that does not originate from crude oil, it is possible to make synthetic copies of gasoline and diesel from biomass, but in that case it would be at the expense of efficiency and manufacturing cost. Instead, if you start from the most energy-efficient alternatives like motor fuels, there are three main candidates namely; Methane, methanol and dimethyl ether, says Rikard Gebart , Professor of Energy Technology at Luleå University of Technology. Which of these alternatives should you choose and why?
