Road safety for cyclists on rural roads

Published: 23 March 2015

Today live about 10-15% of the Swedish population in small towns, ie towns with fewer than 200 residents living in small towns have largely the same need for safe and secure transportation in their neighborhood as living in urban areas, ie one wishes to visit the surroundings on foot and bicycle, traveling to the bus stop or walk and bike to get exercise's sake.

Of all the trips we do in Sweden is about half shorter than 5 km, and a considerable proportion of these are performed per car. If these shorter trips more often performed on foot or by bicycle, it would be a step towards a sustainable transport system and result in environmental benefits.

The project, which is funded by Länsförsäkringar research fund, studied modal split, accident statistics, and trends in its development are identified, as well as barriers and fears for cycling in the countryside. Discussions on infrastructure, equipment and facilities are also conducted; all to increase cyclist safety and availability outside urban areas.
