Effects of investing in walking

Published: 11 November 2016

The overall aim of the project is to promote the transport team time by showing the effects, positive environmental benefits in terms of reduced CO2 emissions and other quantifiable aspects, if there is a shift from motorized transport modes for passenger transport team again. This should be done to meet the target of greenhouse gas emissions from transport must be reduced. The project is a feasibility study and finance by the Finnish Transport Agency. The work is done in collaboration with SWECO.

The overall question of the feasibility study are:

What is the type of action needed to get a transfer from motorized transport to transport by foot? Specific climate-related issues are: What are the right measures to have positive effects on climate, ie which climate action is appropriate for reducing CO2 emissions in relation to investment in transport team again? What steps are needed to get the desired effect? Where are the biggest gains to fetch regarding CO2 reduction? Other issues regarding the selection of vehicles will also be studied:

  • Conflict with other vulnerable road users, bike and scooter, which can influence the choice of transport. It is most beneficial to transport put once in the locality where we have the greatest lack of space. The conflict with other types of vulnerable road users causing accessibility problems.

  • Well-planned and genic walkways, walkway geometry to meet the accessibility requirements, priority at traffic signals, safety, operation and maintenance.

  • Soft incentives to choose the mode of transport time, information campaigns.
