Nordic Wind Energy Center

LTU’s Group of Atmospheric Science is a member of the Nordic Wind Energy Center, intended to support the development of the wind industry from the knowledge gathered so far by several Nordic universities.

Luleå University of Technology’s Group of Atmospheric Science is a member of the Nordic Wind Energy Center, a project framed in the EU’s Botnia-Atlantica Programme, whose aim is to support the development of the wind industry by taking advantage of the knowledge about atmospheric dynamics gathered so far through the research that is being carried out in several Nordic universities. The current member universities, in addition to Luleå’s one, are Novia University of Applied Sciences, Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, Tampere university of Technology, Umeå University, University of Tromsø, and University of Vaasa.
The Group of Atmospheric Science contributes a deeper understanding of the meteorology and climate on the Northern Scandinavian region by applying their experience in the running of General Circulations Models (GCM) and weather simulations generated by means of the mesoscale model Weather Research & Forecasting Model (WRF). Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program (WAsP), and Wind Simulator (WindSim), two industry standard models, are also used to understand how to include detail of the Nordic weather into the wind resource modelling process. This way, a more accurate assessment of the wind resources potential will be possible.
In particular, the task of the Group of Atmospheric Science is to investigate the available wind resources, with emphasis on the atmosphere stability issues which are pertinent for the Nordic climate. The study is based on computational fluid dynamics and numerical techniques to simulate the micro scale wind flow behaviour over terrain of the wind farms. The results are coupled with mesoscale results from other team’s research.
In return, the measurements of the wind and temperature profiles gathered in the region within the project, are useful for the Group regarding the validation and refinement of the General Circulation Models under development, so a valuable scientific payback is gained from the involvement in this cutting-edge project.

Project partners that also participates are Novia University of Applied Sciences, University of Vaasa, Umeå University, Tampere University of Technology, Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences and The Arctic University of Norway.
