Fermentative production of arginine from organosolv hydrolysates

The objective of the project is to establish a rest-stream based production process for arginine phosphate for use as fertilizer. This will be implemented by subjecting birch biomass to organosolv pre-treatment and further enzymatic hydrolysis of the hemicellulose fraction to xylose. The xylose will be used as a substrate for bioreactor cultivations of an arginine overproducing E. coli strain. The resulting broth, rich in arginine, will subsequently be used for formation of arginine phosphate crystals. Improved crystallisation yields will be achieved by complementary studies of ash particles as nucleation agents and cation complexation.
