New competence cluster in structural engineering
A workshop in mid-October 2021 became the starting point for a new international competence cluster in building construction, the AB3C Arctic Building and Construction Competence Cluster. During two days, future plans were drawn up with the goal of being able to adapt construction research to our cold climate up here in northern Scandinavia.
"We have taken the initiative to try to build a more strategic and lasting collaboration between existing collaboration clusters in the construction industry in each country in order to take advantage of the development potential that exists in the North Calotte. This requires increased business, innovation and research collaboration to build more sustainable societies," says Anders Högström at LTU Business.
The participants came from universities and business in northern Sweden, Norway and Finland with the mission of identifying which regional competence clusters exist in each region and then creating a cross-border so-called super cluster.
"We want to capture the companies' needs and challenges such as competence supply, competence development and collaboration needs in research and development," says Gabriel Sas, Professor and Head of Subject in Structural Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.
Study visits were carried out in Kalix where they visited the new bridge over the Kalix river and the old bridge which will have a second life in research when it is now demolished and dismantled. At Luleå University of Technology, they visited different lab environments.
Participants were Rauno Heikkilä, Antti Niemi and Tomi Makkonen from the University of Oulu, Leif Gunnar Hanssen, Iveta Novikova and Bjørn R. Sørensen from UIT Artic University of Norway, Geir Frantzen and Vibeke Lund from KUPA, Terje Nordvåg and Torbjørn Torgnes from SINTEF Narvik, Gabriel Sas, Martin Nilsson and Jonny Nilimaa from Luleå University of Technology and Anders Högström from LTU Business.
