Sven Thysell has passed away
One of Luleå University of Technology's great patrons has gone out of time. Sven Thysell, born in 1916, passed away May 27, 2020. He has through Elsa and Sven Thysell's foundation donated large sums to the university over the years.
Sven Thysell was born in Ängelholm in 1916 and moved, together with his wife Elsa, to Luleå in 1952 and has since lived in the city. Sven and Elsa Thysell took a liking to Luleå University of Technology through contacts with Professor Vladimir Ronin and later Professor Lennart Elfgren and Professor Mats Emborg who is Chairman of the Foundation. In addition, Sven Thysell belongs to the exclusive group that received the University's Medal of Merit, which he was awarded in 2006.
Sven Thysell worked as an officer in the coastal artillery during the post-World War II period when Sweden armed its defense and built bunkers, combat posts, workshops and storage along our long coast.
"Over the years my sense of Norrbotten has strengthened and I want this county to be developed in all areas. I think it's important that we utilize and refine the variety of Norrbotten products", Sven Thysell wrote in a folder published in 2013 by Luleå University of Technology.
Among other things, the friendship led to the founding of Elsa and Sven Thysell's foundation for structural engineering research in road and water at Luleå University of Technology in 2002. Since then, the foundation has awarded grants to doctoral students and researchers for various projects. Sven Thysell has always been active on the Board and had a clear idea of what the money should be used for and to whom.
