Flow Efficiency in industrialized construction

We wish to understand and measure the flow efficiency of the current construction practices that apply resource efficiency. Both efficiencies should be balanced in order to create functional integrated value chains. The project is supported by Träcentrum Norr and the EU structural funds.

Construction is organized to utilize resources in the best way possible. The principle is sound as construction projects utilize many subcontracted and temporary resources. In a construction project, resource efficiency often influences flow efficiency negatively, for example by causing delays on site, poor access to workspaces and delays in completion. Industrialized contractors are working towards improving flow predictability from customer order to delivery. One of the fundamentals of industrialized construction is a customer offering that includes timely delivery and assured quality.

In this project, the doctoral candidate Brian Wernicke and Assistant Professor Helena Lidelöw, are working to understand how flow efficiency can be measured, how flow optimization affects resource efficiency, controls product and process development and how different modes of cooperation between parties influence these. The project studies companies along the value chains using integration of production, operations and integration strategies as the theoretical approach. The project runs though 2016-2018 and funded by Träcentrum Norr and the EU structural funds as part of their investment for world-class Swedish construction.
