The Dragon´s Den 2020

Published: 21 October 2020

This year's version of the innovation competition "The Dragon´s Den" was held in the House of Science due to the corona pandemic and the requirement for physical distance. 42 students in 12 groups presented their business ideas to a jury consisting of Stefan Lindbäck, CEO Lindbäcks Group, Mattias Lindström from PEAB and Karoline Pettersson from LTU Business.

The students study the last year on The Master Programme in Architectural Engineering or The Master Programme in Civil Engineering and were all exited before performing their pitch where many of the presentations were very impressive.

"For me as a teacher, this is the most fun event of the year", says Lars Stehn, professor in Construction Management and Building at Luleå University of Technology.

As some of the innovations also may be competing in the Venture Cup competition, there is confidentiality about what to say about this event that took place behind closed doors in the House of Science, which is normally open to the public. But many of the company names that were introduced show the diversity of visionary ideas that were demonstrated; BeAware Safety, Quickdoor, SMDS - Smart Environmental Data Coordination, Fallguard, Weigh to Win, NoDust, VibeAlert, Find My Tool, ReStruction, FETA bags, EasySpect and SideLight.

Many of the solutions were APP or IT applications, but there were also more traditional inventions. Many focused more on the environment, recycling, logistics and security than on the commercial possibilities.

Two groups shared the first prize this year. It was the group SideLight with its lighting system for safety at workplaces and the group SMDS - Smart Environmental Data Coordination.

"The presentations get sharper and sharper every year, it is gratifying", says Jarkko Erikshammar, university lecturer at Luleå University of Technology.
