Creative innovation competition in the construction sector

Published: 26 January 2018

Jan Krantz, PhD student in the field of construction management and building technology at Luleå University of Technology, is one of the participants in an innovation competition organized by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The purpose of the competition is to radically reduce emissions from infrastructure construction projects in Sweden.

Can you tell us a little about this competition?

"Two teams of representatives from the construction industry, material suppliers and the academy are competing to deliver the best concept for reaching zero emissions of greenhouse gases for a new theoretical Öresund connection. The concepts, developed during 5 meetings in Sweden, could for instance include design, material selection, construction methods and policy changes."

Can you really create real innovations in such a competition?

"Absolutely, it has been done before in the pulp and paper industry. Our discussion environment encourages crazy and extreme ideas. The most promising ideas will be developed and combined into more concrete concepts. System boundaries must also be considered because the concepts may have effects on maintenance requirements and traffic emissions."

How and when will we be able to share your results and creative innovations?

"The winning team will be presented in Almedalen in July 2018. Hopefully by a government official, but that bit is not decided yet. More information is available on the competition website."
