Who leads the development of mass timber construction?

Published: 20 September 2022

Swedish companies in the wood industry are investing in new factories for producing Cross Laminated Timber, and wood is gaining market shares from other structural materials in the Swedish building sector. Market opportunities and products exist, but who is leading the development? Anna-Lena Gull, PhD student at Luleå Technical University will in co-operation with ByggDialog Dalarna explore how industrialized building can be integrated in the traditional construction industry.

ByggDialog Dalarna is a member-owned organization, with a mission from the nearly 100 member organizations to lead the development of sustainable building in the county of Dalarna. ByggDialog Dalarna is now investing in research for a higher competitiveness in the region.

"The county of Dalarna holds building entrepreneurs specialized on wood construction, and a strong wood products industry. New clusters emerge from tight co-operation among construction, manufacturing and technical consultants. We wish to support their development, for example through this PhD project and by that getting access to new knowledge on industrialized building," says Simon Strömqvist, Executive Manager at ByggDialog Dalarna.

PhD student Anna-Lena Gull will, together with Lars Stehn, Professor, and Jarkko Erikshammar, Adjunct at Industrialized and Sustainable Construction, research the impact of organizational capabilities and business models on innovation within mass timber construction.

"I have during many years of professional work been interested in the interfaces between the building products industry and the construction industry. I am looking forward to do a scientific exploration of the temporary factory that is the building project," says Anna-Lena Gull.

The project started in June, 2022, and the first delivery will be a mapping of different ecosystem structures established around mass timber construction projects.
