Development and Implementation of RAMS and LCC Model for Railway Track System

The application of RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) analysis for railway infrastructure is limited. The focus of this thesis was therefore to demonstrate the applicability of RAMS and LCC analyses for railway infrastructure and present models for effective infrastructure maintenance planning.

There is high demand for service quality on railway infrastructure managers today. In order to meet this, efficient maintenance planning is required to be performed effectively throughout the railway infrastructures long asset life. Traditionally maintenance decisions for the railway infrastructure have been based on past experience and expert estimations. The application of RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) analysis for railway infrastructure is limited. The focus of this thesis was therefore to demonstrate the applicability of RAMS and LCC analyses for railway infrastructure and present models for effective infrastructure maintenance planning.

To do this, various case studies associated with Trafikverket and ALSTOM Transport was carried out.

Some of the results of this study were as follows:

  • Approaches and models for estimating RAMS targets based on the service quality requirements of the railway infrastructure.
  • A model for achieving the availability target in both the scheduled and the condition based maintenance regimes.
  • An approach to calculate the uncertainties associated with LCC estimation, refer to figure 1.
