Luleå University of Technology is the only Swedish university that has a complete full-scale railway switch on campus.

– It's great that Trafikverket has given us a complete railway switch. It will significantly improve our research, "says Jan Lundberg, Professor of Operation and Maintenance at Luleå University of Technology.

Luleå University of Technology is the only Swedish university that now has a complete full-scale railway switch on campus. It is 30 meter and it is Professor Jan Lundberg who received the switch as a gift from Trafikverket, who for ten years he conducted research in collaboration with.

The switch will initially be used to study the machines that handle the switches on the railroad. The switches are a central part of the railroad, and now Trafikverket and JVTC Railroad Technical Center at LTU want to further develop the machines handling the switches to further increase safety and punctuality in rail traffic.

At present, a cooperation project is being planned between Luleå University of Technology, and the Swedish Transport Administration and the Canadian company Bombardier, which manufactures among all rail, locomotive and gearboxes. The railwau switch at the university area will be used to make power measurements and calculations that will form the basis for the Swedish Transport Agency's development work, to improve the specifications for the shift function of future gear.

Previously research by Jan Lundberg has resulted in a number of new conceptual proposals and new prototypes for railway switches. His research encompasses a number of different aspects of switches and has always been conducted in cooperation with Trafikverket and Railroad Manufacturers.
