Dr. Kai Goebel from the Intelligent Systems Division at NASA becomes adjunct professor in Operation and Maintenance Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. He will work as a supervisor of graduate students and visit the university a couple of times per year.

"This is a terrific enhancement for our division and a great inspiration for our young researchers", says Uday Kumar, professor in Operations and Maintenance Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

Operation and Maintenance Engineering deals with the development of methodologies, models and tools to ensure high system dependability and efficient and effective maintenance processes for both new and existing systems.

Kai Goebel is a area lead of the Discovery and Systems Health Technology Area at NASA Ames Research Center. He also coordinates the Prognostics Center of Excellence and is the Technical Lead for Prognostics and Decision Making in NASAs System-wide Safety and Assurance Technologies Project.

"I have found LTU to be a vibrant, open-minded, and globally oriented university. I am looking forward to engaging with the academic community and to sharing my experience in the field of Prognostics and Health Management", says Kai Goebel.

A year ago Dr. Kai Goebel visited Luleå University of Technology and then held a well-attended and appreciated lecture on the challenges of a manned trip to Mars will mean.
