The intern Hanna works with metaverse

Published: 15 November 2022

Hanna Eriksson has recently graduated high school and through the Tekniksprånget internship program got the chance to do an internship with the research group in operation and maintenance Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. There, Hanna works as a project assistant with programming for applications in the metaverse.

Tekniksprånget is an internship program where Sweden's employers, together with the government, invest in securing our future supply of skills by attracting more young people to higher technical educations.

Can you tell us a little about what you do at work?

"I work with Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), and develop applications to be used for operation and maintenance technology.

The Metaverse has existed as a hypothetical concept for a few decades. The idea is that you can find yourself in another, digital world, where you can meet someone on the other side of the world as if both were in the same room. Now that it is becoming relevant and possible to implement via VR and AR, it is believed to be applicable in many ways in a large number of areas, including for operation and maintenance technology.

I use game technology to make this a reality, like VR glasses and a game engine and development platform to write code and create digital environments that can become part of the Metaverse."

Is this something you want to work on in the future?

"Actually, I aim to do research in biomedicine, but Metaverse may become relevant there as well. Programming is a skill that is useful in many different areas, so it is not inconceivable that it is part of my future job."

Is this something you want to recommend your friends try?

"Yes, I am very satisfied with my time here. It has been fun, interesting and educational. The Tekniksprånget internship program is a very good way for graduated science and technology students to gain experience and contacts before they continue their studies, to be able to contribute with their knowledge while earning money.

Moreover, my job is not the only possibility. The Tekniksprånget internship program has many different types of jobs. You can, for example, work in chemistry, as a laboratory assistant at a university or company."

Innovative operation and maintenance engineering

Ramin Karim is a professor of operation and maintenance engineering at the university and he says that the metaverse and similar virtual worlds will have a major impact on our industrial future.

"We combine AI, digital technology, big data, VR, AR and XR in the area of asset management and maintenance, to create benefits for industries such as mining, railways, transport, aviation and construction," says Ramin Karim.
