Examine new electronics that can damage networks

New electronics that are expected to save energy and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide can also cause damage and shorten the life of appliances connected to the electricity grid. That counteracts the national environmental objectives. A new research project at Luleå University of Technology, which has already attracted international attention, will identify cause and correlation.

- The causes of damage are currently unclear and leads to increased vulnerability for society and industry. Therefore, our research are urgent, says Professor Martin Lundmark, Department of Energy Science at Luleå University of Technology.

He is responsible for a research group that studies the impact on the grid when the use of new power dependent technologies, for example in solar and wind power, electric cars and rail technology, introduced online. Changing to energy efficient lighting is one of many cost-effective ways to reduce carbon emissions. A prerequisite for the change to have a positive impact on the environment, is that the new energy lamps last long enough. Today, there are problems with the sustainability problems that may be related to stress changes in the grid.

The new research project, aiming to clarify how new electrical and lighting interact and mains, has just started. The research has attracted much international attention. Companies such as Philips, Osram, Boliden, Skelleftea Kraft, Nordic Light AB and others involved in the project.
