LTU participates in biogas project with China

An ongoing Vinnova project between Sweden and China aims to take the biogas production to the next level. The project concerns the development of biogas technology in both countries, but also contribute to an environmentally friendly solution to China's waste problem.

Double benefit of biogas

The biogas process plays an important role in sustainable society because of its combination of waste treatment with a biofuel production. It is especially important for China due to huge amounts of organic wastes and the rapidly increasing demand for energy and fuels.

Sweden has been using biogas for a long time, and China hopes to learn from its Swedish partner. Not least when it comes to commercialize and capitalize on the knowledge available at universities.

- Sweden has modern techniques and a modern living style and we want to learn more about the situation here, says Professor Xiaohua Lu from Nanjing University of Technology. He also explains that they hope to come up with methods and policies to the Chinese government to support the sustainable development in China.

- Also Sweden will benefit from the project because the technology used in the biogas process needs improvement, says Xiaoyan, Ji, Assistant Professor of Energy Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

Problem with waste in China

In Sweden, people are talking about sustainable energy, while China's focus is on waste management.

- If China does not take care of its waste, it will lead to major environmental problems. By using biogas, China can take care of the waste in a more environmentally friendly manner, while also producing energy, says Xiaoyan Ji,

The first part of the project, Phase A, is to build a platform for cooperation between the countries. An application for Phase B was recently submitted, which includes three additional years so that projects identified in phase A can be implemented. The cooperation includes field trips and workshops where Swedish partners visit China and vice versa.

LTU leads the project where researchers from Energy Engineering, Waste Science and Technology and Sustainable Process Engineering are involved. From China, researchers from the Nanjing University of Technology and a bioenergy company from Jiangsu participate. Other partners are Swedish companies in the FuturEco cluster, the company Scandinavian Biogas and the research institute SP.
