Doctoral studies

It is possible to study for a PhD in English and Education at Luleå University of Technology.

PhD positions offered within the subject are five-year contracts, which comprise four years of third-cycle studies and one year of departmental duties, for example, teaching. PhD studies within the subject include 60–70 credits of course work and another 170–180 credits of thesis work. The dissertation normally takes the form of a compilation thesis of articles and the work is supervised by at least two experienced researchers, who meet the doctoral students individually on a regular basis throughout their studies. Work in progress is also presented at research seminars open to other members of the research community.

Positions are announced 

Doctoral students can only be hired by the university when positions are opened for competitive application. These positions are announced on LTU’s list of vacancies. Applicants are expected to have completed their MA degree with distinction. Applications require a full research plan and a sample of the applicant’s academic writing (for instance, a degree essay).

Third-cycle courses

At Luleå University of Technology, a number of general third-cycle courses are available to all doctoral students. English and Education is responsible for Structures in academic English (course code FOR048F), which is a very popular course of 7.5 credits.
