Conference Focusing on English Studies

Published: 20 May 2015

Luleå University of Technology is hosting a national conference on the theme of English Studies this week. The National Forum for English Studies is held every two years and attracts researchers and teachers from universities and schools across the country.

- It is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our small but successful research group here at the University. Previously, not everyone knew that one can study English up to PhD level at Luleå University of Technology, says Lydia Kokkola, organizer and Professor of English and Education at the University.

Organized in cooperation with SWESSE

The conference is organized by Luleå University of Technology in cooperation with SWESSE (The Swedish Society for the Study of English) and is open to all active researchers and teachers in the field of English Studies in Sweden. The theme of the conference is English and Education, with particular focus on the connection between current research in English and how English is taught at universities and schools around the country.
Lydia Kokkola is looking forward to three days of intense networking and exciting lectures.

- We have managed to attract all our first choice of lecturers and it's fantastic that they could come. But a conference like this concentrates on networking, which is particularly important when applying for research funding, says Lydia Kokkola and continues.

- It is also a good chance for our PhD students to make contacts that can be helpful in their future professional career.

The start of an enhanced cooperation

National Forum for English Studies will take place from May 20 to May 22 in Luleå.  Interest in the event has been excellent, not least from practicing teachers in the area.

- We have not seen this level of interest from school teachers in the previous conferences, and it is a truly wonderful surprise. It shows that the continued professionalization of the profession and the realization that research and education go hand in hand really has taken hold in all parts of the English education. We hope this can be the start of further cooperation with the teachers in Norrbotten, says Lydia Kokkola.
