Best Paper Award at prestigious conference

Published: 14 June 2018

The research group in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Luleå University of Technology recently won the Best Paper Award at one of the most prestigious conferences in their field.

– It is a conference specifically for our research community within servitization and advanced services, which means that many of the most prominent scholars within our field participate and appoint the best paper awards. The category we won – Ecosystem, Value and Digitalization – can be considered one of the more prestigious ones as the topic is on the top of many companies’ and research communities’ agenda, says Vinit Parida, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

The title of the awarded paper is Exploiting digital opportunities through business models: Empirical insights from leading Swedish manufacturing companies, and is written by Lina Sundén, Vinit Parida and David Sjödin.

The research is based on the Vinnova-funded research project DigIn – Digital Innovation of Business Models, where around 20 Swedish companies (e.g. ABB, Ericsson, Volvo CE, Boliden, Metso, Gestamp Hardtech, SCA, Komatsu Forest, Lindbäcks Bygg, Noda Intelligence etc.), within four different industries participate; mining, manufacturing, forestry and construction. The project explore how companies can benefit from digitalization and how the business model lens can help them in this challenge.

– The paper presented at the conference is a core paper to this project as it proposes a framework to help companies evaluate ideas for new, digitally enabled, business models. Starting from a specific customer opportunity and a corresponding business model idea, the framework guides firms in (1) assessing opportunities, (2) analyzing risks, and (3) modelling the financial conditions, to arrive at a go or no-go for exploiting digital business model opportunities, says Lina Sundén, PhD student, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

What does it mean for your research group to win an award like this?

– To receive a best paper-award is of course a great honor and acknowledgment that our research is relevant and hold international standard. We are extra proud since this is Linas first article as a PhD candidate which is awarded. It also motivates and give you energy to work even harder to contribute to both academia and industry. As the research is based on a Vinnova-funded research project, you could also say that the award recognize/validates that the Swedish research agenda and that the knowledge is relevant also outside Sweden, says David Sjödin, Associate Professor, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
