The University won the SmartSteel Innovation Challenge

Published: 18 December 2018

The SmartSteel Innovation Challenge competition is about finding new ways to label steel, thereby creating unique "fingerprints" for individual steel products. Of the contest's 26 contributions, Luleå University of Technology and the Fraunhofer IPM Institute from Germany were awarded first place.

SSAB and Sandvik Materials Technology are behind the competition, which was settled in Stockholm in December with competitors from Sweden, South Africa, Germany and Finland. The two winning contributions are based on the principle of using the material itself to identify the products throughout their lifecycle and thereby make themselves independent of separate labeling.

– This is a good recognition for the research I've been doing for less than 30 years. I hope that it will lead to a good and fruitful collaboration with Sandvik Materials Technology and SSAB in the future, says Mikael Sjödahl, Professor of Experimental Mechanics at Luleå University of Technology.
