LTU has since 2008 been a partner in the Sandvik International Mining School (SIMS)

Published: 26 October 2015

Every year, since 2008, a two week course with specialization in underground hard rock mining and rock reinforcement has taken place at Luleå University of Technology in the end of September. The students in SIMS have been from all over the world and their background covered all from exploration in surface mining to processing, drilling, lauding and hauling in underground mines.

"Being part of the SIMS has been a fantastic journey. It was a wonderful final graduation with many good project works and well prepared speeches from for instance the President of the Sandvik Mining business area Scot Smith. SIMS has been and will continue to be my great star in the sky when it comes to contract and life long education says the coordinator at LTU (Assist. Prof.) Catrin Edelbro at the Division of Mining and Geotechnical Engineering and head of undergraduate students at the Department of Civil Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering."

Also every year a four days final graduation including oral exams and project presentations has taken place at Montanuniversitet in Leoben (Austria). The following partners have been involved in the SIMS program: Montanuniversitaet Leoben, (Austria) Camborne School of Mines, (UK), Colorado School of Mines, (USA), Luleå University of Technology, (Sweden) UNSW (Australia) and the University of the Witwatersrand, (South Africa). However this year, 2015, was the final graduation and the end of SIMS. At the final graduation 21 happy students did graduate at Sandvik.
