Modelling and simulation of thermo-mechanical processes

Published: 4 September 2014

The aim of the project is to create a long-term cooperation between institutes, universities and companies in the region who work in steel fabrication and heat treatment processes and thereby help strengthen the region's competitiveness in the field. The goal is that the region of Norrbotten will maintain and strengthen its role as a prominent and leading region for steel making, heat treatment and component production in thermo-mechanical processes. This will be done by using advanced numerical models and methods for the development of new as well as to improve existing processes and products. This will give significant advantages in terms of; reduced development times, reduced number of prototypes, increased productivity, improved quality, reduced scrap, less rework and reduced environmental impact in terms of emissions by optimized heating.

A critical step in the project is to improve and develop models that in the current situation is used to predict the manufactured component final geometrical shape and mechanical properties before expensive components associated with prototyping and series of tools manufactured is produced. In the proposed project, methods and numerical models are developed to further enhance the virtual product development of thermoformed components by stamping or other thermo-mechanical coupled processes for low and medium alloyed steels. As important as precise and efficient numerical models is the experimentally determined input data for the models. Extended and precise microstructural, mechanical and thermal data are need to be determined for the models. Methods and procedures to determine these experimental inputs will be developed as part of the project. Evaluation and analysis of experimental data for input to the models will as far as possible be performed in the region. Examples of other areas where these models and methods can be applied:

  • General heat treatment (heating, hardening, tempering, annealing, etc.)
  • Welding
  • Steel production (casting)
  • Hot Rolling
  • Forging
