Light steel sandwiches for reduced ecological footprint

Solid mechanics has received funding within the research program LIGHTer for developing sandwich concepts with densities 30% lower density than the for a solid steel with retained thickness. The aim is to reduce the weight of heavy trucks and thereby meet the long term goals regarding reduction of greenhouse gases emissions. The sandwich materials shall fulfil the high demands from the truck and automotive industry regarding stiffness, crashworthiness and fatigue. Further, the sandwich concepts will be investigated for armoured vehicle for future development of lightweight blast mitigation protection systems.
