– They are a strong company in an expanding branch of the manufacturing industry and we already have research together. They have a technique for making iron powder, an area in which Luleå University of Technology is also working, says Roland Larsson.
Their iron powder is used to press gears and metal parts to for example gearboxes, details in cars or sewing machines.
– Höganäs make a high quality powder which is very important for the quality of the products to be manufactured. It will benefit our research and our other collaborations, says Marta-Lena Antti, Chair Professor of Materials Engineering.
Researchers in the subjects of Solid Mechanics, Engineering Materials, Machine Elements, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Material Mechanics, Experimental Mechanics and Chemical Technology, were hosts for the delegation and showed several of the university's laboratories. Sigurd Berg is the head of the additive manufacturing department at Höganäs AB, and he is looking forward to the extended cooperation.
– I am very impressed with the university's activities and how much equipment that are available in the labs. We had a nice visit that sparked into defined areas of collaboration in additive manufacturing and coating, he says.
According to Roland Larsson, Luleå University of Technology has one of Sweden's leading unified mechanical engineering research environments with mechanical engineering, materials engineering and physics in one and the same organization.
– We are well placed to assist Höganäs in the development of future materials and manufacturing processes, he concluded.
