Attractiveness and inclusion are crucial for the region's development

Published: 28 November 2017

According to researchers at Luleå University of Technology, an attractive and inclusive region with qualified work force is crucial for how the region will develop in the future.

– Companies in Norrbotten have great ambitions to grow, but they have difficulty when it comes to the competence provision. How we get employable people will set the pace for the future development of the region, says Daniel Örtqvist, professor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Luleå University of Technology.

About 200 people gathered on Friday when Region Norrbotten started the work with developing a new regional development strategy. Daniel Örtqvist presented current results from the project "Regional Renewal" where the University and the County Administrative Board in Norrbotten collaborates to increase the understanding of the regions opportunities and challenges.

– We need to invest in the educational system and take advantage of the skills of asylum seekers and refugees. But to attract human capital to the region, we must continue to develop attractive cities where there is a good community service for our citizens, he says.

Increased gender equality and diversity is questions that needs to be addressed for creating an attractive region. Malin Lindberg, Assistant Professor in Gender and Technology at Luleå University of Technology, has analysed how the new regional development strategy can pave the way for an inclusive development in Norrbotten.

– The key is to design the entire chain from current situation analysis, vision, priority areas to resource allocation based on a variety of voices and perspectives. It is extra important to include the groups, sectors and industries that do not share the same position in society.

Region Norrbotten is responsible for developing the regional development strategy and the work will continue for several years in cooperation with Luleå University of Technology, the business community, municipalities and civil society. The strategy will form the basis for the region's future funding and efforts.

– The new regional development strategy is an umbrella for all other regional strategies and will therefore set the tone for different ventures for a long time to come. Therefore, it is important that the focus is on the sustainable and inclusive development of the region, says Daniel Örtqvist.
