A unique short course in Applied Field Exploration

Publicerad: 18 juni 2019

A unique short course in Applied Field Exploration was organized by LTU on 10-14 June, within the EXplORE MSc exchange program in exploration.

The course consisted of practical excercises in field exploration methodologies applicable to VMS exploration. The practicals outlined a workflow from early geological mapping focusing on structure, stratigraphy and alteration, to subsequent target delineation using ground geophysical measurements, finally followed by examination of a legacy diamond drill core from the study area. The study area was chosen since it contained a minor VMS lens which does not outcrop and which has never been mined, forcing the students to collaborate in teams to apply their knowledge to figure out where it is located. The daily exercises were followed by evening lectures by invited industry and survey professionals that are active in various parts of the exploration value-chain.

A unique short course in Applied Field Exploration was organized by LTU on 10-14 June, within the EXplORE MSc exchange program in exploration.

The course participants consisted of 16 MSc students from AGH (Poland), LTU (Sweden), OMS (Finland) and TUBAF (Germany), three PhD students from LTU and four junior exploration geologists from Boliden Mineral AB. These participants were evenly distributed into working groups containing a representative of each university as well as a Boliden geologist. The course was taught by Associate Professor Tobias Bauer and Senior Lecturer Nils Jansson, both of the Division of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering at LTU.

EXplORE is a EIT RawMaterials-supported MSc exchange program between Luleå University of Technology (Sweden), Oulu Mining School (Finland), AGH (Poland) and TUBAF (Germany). For more information visit www.explore.agh.edu.pl, or follow us on www.facebook.com/EXplOREEIT for frequent updates.
