Workshop EIT Raw Materials

Published: 22 April 2015

There is a wide interest among researchers throughout Luleå University of Technology to become involved in EIT Raw Materials, the largest EU-initiative ever in promoting innovation within raw materials. 116 partners; global industry, leading institutes and universities from 22 countries particpate in the venture. EIT RawMaterials is coordinated by six innovation hubs, so called Co-Location Centres, distributed throughout Europé. LTU has the responsibility as hosting organisation to establish one of them in Luleå. Many participants came to a meetingthe workshop.

–  The EIT Raw Materials has, as the name suggests, largely a focus on promoting innovation in mining and natural resources, but there are also great possibility possibilities for interdisciplinary projects ranging from occupational health and technical innovations, says Maria Magdalena Holmgren, Interim Manager, EIT RawMaterials Northern Co-Location Centre. The focus of EIT is to commercialize R&D into new products and services for an international market, she concludes.

For more than three years, a team, a team from Luleå University of Technology, have worked strategically to provide Sweden and primary resources a platform in the EIT RawMaterials Community. When establishing the organisation the Future mining arranged a full day of workshops involving research groups from all over the departments at university.

The interest was high and the potential to scale up their research projects from national funding level to a new EU-level is of course tempting. One of the benefits of being engaged in such a competetive consortium is to respond to large calls within Horizon 2020 jointly with the partners of EIT RawMaterials.

The EIT RawMaterials will run for seven years with an option to extend for a further 7 years. Turnover per year is estimated at 400 million Euros. EIT stands for The European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
