Researchers with state support are now investigating for the first time whether Sweden can bury carbon dioxide on land - deep in the bedrock outside Kalix.
"We want to see if we can find basalt and other rocks that react easily with carbon dioxide, to see if it is possible to store carbon dioxide on land in Sweden," says Glenn Bark, researcher in ore geology at Luleå University of Technology.
