A wet clutch is a system that is designed to provide a certain type of friction behavior, often applied at the gear shifts of an automatic transmission. Thus, the specific materials and lubricants are developed with these goals in mind. The lubricants and materials are however not designed to handle the most common contaminant in these systems; water.

Nowshir Fatima has in her thesis looked at how water affects the friction characteristics of a wet clutch.
