Prestigious award for tribology Professor

Published: 16 June 2015

Professor Ichiro Minami at Luleå University of Technology was recently nominated as Fellow in the world's largest tribology organization, STLE. The nomination is an acknowledgement of Ichiro Minami’s research in the field of tribo-chemistry, in which he is a pioneer.

– Becoming a Fellow is a great honour for me and it means that the tribology community through STLE (Society of Tribologist and Lubrication Engineers, USA) acknowledges my research in tribo-chemistry, and consider it to be of high quality. I am originally a chemist and I am also a Fellow of the RSC (The Royal Society of Chemistry, UK). My task is to strengthen the science in tribo-chemistry, and I appreciate the confidence given by my fellow tribologists, says Ichiro Minami, Professor in Machine Elements at Luleå University of Technology.

For more than 25 years, Ichiro Minami have been doing research in the field of tribology, combined with his expertise in chemistry. He has been part of international collaborations with academia and industry in both Europe and the US. Ichiro Minami is also a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences.

Ichiro Minami was one of three Fellows appointed by STLE in 2015 and a total of 160 Fellows have been nominated in the organization's 70-year history. Ichiro Minami believes that the appointment will be beneficial for his future research.

– Since tribology is a multidisciplinary field, I need to communicate with researchers in different areas. With the appointments of the STLE and the RSC, researchers in different subjects will trust me in these areas. This will help me to start new projects.
