New Master programme in Cybernetics

Luleå University of Technology expands its range of master programmes with a Master programme in Cybernetics. The programme will meet the increasing needs of engineers for broad and advanced skills within AI, Machine Learning, and process control to tackle the challenges of sustainable development.

– The programme will combine process control and robotics, including bio robotics, with AI and machine learning, says Andreas Johansson, Senior Lecturer of Automatic Control and Faculty Programme Director.

The programme’s focus is on automatic control and machine learning. A unique feature is the access to research lab facilities and specifically to the field robotics lab at Luleå University of Technology; it is equipped with one of the biggest outdoor motion capture systems available in Europe. It allows demonstration of technologies in both ground and aerial robotics and enables the students to apply newly learned knowledge in a realistic context to maximize the learning effect. Moreover, the students will have the opportunity to engage with the regional industries where real-life use-cases for the learned concepts are found. An intense and well-established cooperation with regional industry in mining, steel, paper, datacenter etc. will enable such collaboration through study projects, internships, and guest lectures.

– These industries will be our labs when testing new process control techniques, says Andreas Johansson.

Sustainable development

The programme’s approach handles important challenges of the future. Making production of steel, paper and electric power, more efficient through development in process control has the potential to reduce emissions and resource consumption.

– We find this competence useful for contributing to sustainable development. Also, there is a current technological trend towards artificial intelligence and machine learning, techniques that will be increasingly important in the fields of robotics and process control.

There is a broad spectrum of engineering programmes that make a suitable background for this new master progamme, for example mechanical, electrical, chemical, computer, and aerospace engineering. The most important requirement is that you have taken a basic course in the subject of automatic control.

– In fact, we want students with a variety of backgrounds so we can put together teams with broad skills when it comes to project work, says Andreas Johansson.
