"I have several years of mining industry experience"

Published: 3 December 2021

Tawanda Zvarivadza is a new employee and a part of a team of LTU and Swedish Mining Industry researchers working on a project to develop destressing strategies for mining under highly stressed conditions in the deep mines of Sweden.

What are you going to work on?

The research entails field observations and investigations in different deep mines of our project partners in Sweden. The project partners are LKAB, Boliden and Zinkgruvan Mining AB.

The field observations and investigations will be coupled with numerical modeling to develop methods for assessing burst proneness and deformation potential of the deep underground mining excavations.

Tell us a little about your background

I have several years of mining industry experience spanning several mining companies and organisations at an international level. This include: large scale exploration, several environments for both underground and surface mining, International Rock Engineering Consulting, Numerical Modelling using a number of codes, International Geotechnical Research with several countries, Mining Machinery Service Industry, Academia among others. Tawanda has worked for several companies including Vimbo Consulting (Pty) Ltd, University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), Midlands State University (Zimbabwe), University of Botswana, African Associated Mines, Todal Mining, Buchwa Iron Ore Mining Company, Atlas Copco Zimbabwe, SRK Consulting South Africa as well as research work with the Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. He holds two Masters Degrees from Wits University, that is MSc Eng Mining (Rock Engineering) and MEng Mining (Mineral Economics, Mineral Resource Evaluation and Environment and Sustainable Development). Officially rated by peers and students to be in the top 5 % of academics at Wits University for his teaching, Tawanda graduated as a top student for BSc Eng (Hons) Mining at the University of Zimbabwe. He is a member of several International Professional Organisations including: International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM - Lifetime member), American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA – Lifetime member), Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), South African National Institute of Rock Engineering (SANIRE), Society of Mining Professors (SOMP) and Golden Key International Honour Society (GKIHS) among others. Tawanda has extensively authored and co-authored international peer reviewed Journal and conference papers published in Africa, Asia, Europe, America and Australia. His countries of experience include: Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Tunisia, Turkey, Germany, Canada, USA, Sweden, Russia, Norway, China and Chile.
