FRAGBLAST to Luleå 2018

Published: 28 August 2015

It is my pleasure to inform you that Luleå, LTU and the division of Mining and Geotechnical Engineering, yesterday got the honour to arrange the prestige’s International Symposium of Rock Fragmentation by Blasting (FRAGBLAST 12) in 2018.

Last time in New Delhi, 2012 we, lost the final election round with one vote in favour of Sydney, Australia. This time it was even more dramatic when the final election round ended 7 votes for Luleå and 7 votes for the Brazilian candidate. The chairman of the international organizing committee, that in case of equal votes will decide, hesitated and finally it was decided by a flipped coin, which luckily ended in favour of Luleå, Sweden. This means that we at LTU will host the symposium and welcome a large number of blasting experts to Luleå the 11 to 13 of June, 2018.

We are very happy and proud that we succeeded to bring FRAGBLAST back to Luleå were it was initiated in 1983, 32 years ago. We would also like to thank everyone that has contributed to this success, in particularly the industrial partners that has supported the application, also here in Sydney, but also PhD students and other representatives from LTU, that through excellent presentations here in Sydney have demonstrated LTU’s high qualifications in rock blasting and mining.
