Conference focusing on streamed music

Published: 10 June 2020

Next week, the Music in the Age of Streaming conference will be held at the School of Music at Luleå University of Technology. For two days, the event brings together Nordic and international researchers with an interest in streamed music.

– This means a lot to the research environment at the School of Music in Piteå and I hope that it can lead to new collaborations and serve as a joint experience bank in the future, says Cecilia Ferm-Almqvist, visiting professor at Luleå University of Technology and one of the conference organizers.

Conference node

The conference is organized in collaboration between the project Evolving Bildung in the nexus of streaming services, art and users - Spotify as a case funded by the Wallenberg Foundation in the nexus of streaming services, art and users - Spotify as a case and the IASPM-norden, which is a Nordic part of an international network focusing on popular music research. Due to the current coronal situation, the conference will be streamed digitally to participants scattered around the world.

– However, the School of Music will be the node and I look forward to taking part in all different perspectives on streamed music and to present the results of our own interdisciplinary project, says Cecilia Ferm-Almqvist.

Different perspectives

During the conference, a variety of perspectives on streaming music will be raised.

– It will affect everything from technical (algorithmic), ideological, democratic to educational or artistically related issues, says Cecilia Ferm Almqvist and looks forward to the exchange of knowledge.

– The conference will give researchers from all over the world the opportunity to together try to understand the complex phenomenon of streamed music and other sounding art.

The conference was supposed to be held on site in Piteå and the School of Music, but the plans had to change quickly in the spring due to the ongoing pandemic.

– There was no alternative, it is not possible to call off a conference on the theme of streaming because it currently needs to be streamed. I even think it makes the conference even more innovative and exciting, says Cecilia Ferm Almqvist.
