Royaly awarded for educational efforts

Published: 7 December 2018

Björn Hällis, teacher and university lecturer at Luleå University of Technology, is awarded Göran Lagervall's music scholarship in higher music education. The prize is awarded to teachers who have made significant educational efforts at one of the country's music colleges.

– Being awarded Göran Lagervall's music scholarship came as a surprise and of course it feels extremely honorable. I see it as a recognition that I am on the right track in my teaching and in my attempts to find new teaching methods, says Björn Hällis.

Develops new teaching methods

In the motivation, Björn Hällis efforts in the development of new teaching methods and methods in program and independent courses are emphasized.

– In recent years I have, in cooperation with colleagues, explored opportunities for distance education in artistic subjects. Together with Arne Hagström (project manager) and Robert Svensson, I have also worked to develop group teaching as a complement to individual education in main instrument courses, says Björn Hällis.

Curiosity is important

Björn Hällis teaches at the School of Music in Piteå and emphasizes the luxury of seeing the students progress and finding inspiration for personal development during working hours. For him, curiosity is an important element in what makes a good teacher.

– A good teacher manages his subject area and ensures that he maintains and develops his / her skills. In addition, it is important to give a good example of curiosity for different styles and musical contexts, and to meet students as potential future colleagues. This I strive to live up to.
