Appointed as new conductor for Sweden's youth choir

Published: 21 May 2018

Erik Westberg, professor at Luleå University of Technology, was recently appointed as the new conductor for Sweden's Youth Choir.

- Of course, it feels both exciting and honorable. It was after all close to 40 years since I last was conducting a youth choir - unforgettable and sweet memories that I carried with me as a vaccine throughout all years, says Erik Westberg.

Test their musical wings

The Swedish Youth Choir (SVUK) is based on the idea that in Sweden - like in most countries in Europe and the rest of the world - there will be a national youth choir with representation of young, ambitious singers from across the country. It will act as an important musical meeting place for singers between the ages of 16-25 and thereby a role model and inspiration for young singers around Sweden. Erik Westberg looks forward to the challenge and the confidence to lead SVUK for the next three years.

- What matters most with the mission is to test my musical wings and ears in an ensemble with young musicians. It becomes a challenge to find a repertoire that both develops each individual and the ensemble as a musical body.

Brings the desire for new music

Erik Westberg starts the assignment as new conductor for SVUK in the fall of 2018 and despite the fact that he has not yet met the choir, the ambitions are already there.

- I have not yet met SVUK, so I do not have a sound experience of them yet, but of course I take my pleasure to work with new music, exciting tours, artistic productions and performances in different contexts where SVUK plays an important role.

What does SVUK mean for the future of Swedish choir music?

- I hope the singers bring along important choir experiences and experiences that give them the curiosity to continue with music - not just as a choir singer, but also to enjoy the amazing range of live music given every week in countless places in our country. SVUK's importance for regrowth is enormous by, for example, the cooperation with The Radio choir, our premier professional choir in Sweden and belonging to the absolute top layer of Europe's choirs.

Since 1990, Erik Westberg has worked at the School of Music at Luleå University of Technology where he teaches choir conducting and choir singing. He has achieved great success with the School of Music's chamber's choir as well as his own vocal ensemble and ha a place in the Royal Musical Academy.
