Energy Conference for future challenges

Published: 4 April 2016

A broad national energy conference that brings together researchers, government agencies, politicians and industry is for the first time organized in Sweden. Luleå University of Technology is the host and the focus is on the transformation of the Swedish energy system.

The Swedish energy system faces many challenges and the pressure to find solutions is increasing. How will Sweden become more energy efficient? How do we reduce fossil fuels and increase the proportion of biofuels and renewable energy? How do we manage the emissions targets? These are large and complex issues that require a strong research effort in order to find cost-effective solutions.

Among the keynote speakers can Sweden's Energy Minister Ibrahim Baylan be found together with representatives from the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate, Skellefteå Kraft and Vattenfall. This means that a wide range of issues will be touched, which also appeals to many different research disciplines.

– The uniqueness of the conference is that it emphasizes the Swedish conditions. We have not had a forum where politicians, authorities, industry and researchers can meet to discuss these issues, says Robert Lundmark, Professor in Economics at Luleå University of Technology, who also holds the conference chair.

– Politicians and authorities are responsible for the visions and regulations towards achieving Sweden’s energy goals. Researchers need to build models and analyse the conditions and consequences of the different steps of the process. In the end, the industry has to make the practical change, to bring in new technology and adapt their production. It will be a good triple helix when these parties can come together in this way, concludes Robert Lundmark.

The conference is organized by the Swedish Energy Economics Association (SAEE), the Swedish chapter of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). Luleå University of Technology is the host. The organizing committee is Robert Lundmark, Luleå University of Technology; Mats Nilsson, Swedish Energy/Luleå University of Technology; Christer Berglund, Vattenfall; Joakim Lundgren, Luleå University of Technology and Tommy Lundgren, Umeå University.

The conference will be held August 23 to 24, 2016.
