New online Psychiatric Care Specialist Nursing Programme

Published: 4 October 2016

The shortage of specialist nurses in psychiatric care is acute. In the autumn of 2017 Luleå University of Technology is to offer a Psychiatric Care Specialist Nursing Programme fully online in order to enable nurses to achieve specialist qualification.

– We want to provide the opportunity to combine work with studies. We see a positive trend where more and more employers are signing agreements on academic specialist education and by other means try to make it easier for nurses to attend specialist education. We think this type of flexible solutions are required, says senior lecturer Sebastian Gabrielsson.

The first two semesters at Luleå University of Technology´s new Psychiatric Care Specialist Nursing Programme consist of theoretical studies at half speed. The studies in the third and final semester are conducted at full speed in the form of clinical education in psychiatric services, and the students also write a Masters thesis.

The programme is to start in August 2017. Students are required to have professional experience working as a nurse in order to be eligible.

– We have conducted distance learning on the Nursing programme since the 90s and have always been quick to incorporate new technologies. The step to a fully online education is not so far away, says senior lecturer Git-Marie Ejneborn Looi.

Git-Marie Ejneborn Looi and Sebastian Gabrielsson, senior lecturers in nursing science at Luleå University of Technology, are the teachers responsible for the new programme. Both are nurses specialized in psychiatric care with many years of experience in education, research and clinical work.
