LKAB project get more youths to study

In an interdisciplinary project funded by LKAB Academy, will researchers from pedagogy and business economics at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) find a model that stimulatesc children and youths in north of Sweden to higher education.

– There will be a meeting between how students can better assimilate education and how it financially will benefit the society, says Malin Malmström, senior lecturer in accounting and control at LTU.

The more than three-year long project of approximately 4.3 million is funded by LKAB Academy and consists of three parts. The first aims to identify children and young people's attitude towards education. The next step focuses on stimulating activities at pre-school level in order to arouse an interest in higher education. In the final phase, will a model that can support the competence of individuals and exploiting the potential of young people in Kiruna and Gällivare be developed. This benefits the region's long-term skills and ultimately LKAB.

– LKAB has an interest in providing the company with expertise at all levels in the future. Even today you can see problems with the recruiting base and the tenant is not the greatest, says Malin Malmström.

Early action creates change

Along with Anna Öqvist, lecturer in pedagogy at the university, will a data collection consisting of surveys and interviews be conducted. By studying a wide range of ages from middle school to high school, can the researchers determine when actions need to come in order for students to be motivated and interested in further education.

– It will identify and provide a deeper understanding of attitudes, values ​​and norms on how children and young people are looking at higher education and their future in the region. We know that a small percentage of young people choose to go on to higher education. Because children's curiosity, interest and learning already starts in kindergarten, it is important that action starts right there, says Anna Öqvist.

– Interviews will also be conducted with staff from LKAB to identify the skills supply and explore strategies for succession planning for the future. It's all about needs to offer, says Malin Malmström.

The project will also include workshops with teachers, principals and school management, and meeting forums to launch the activities in the school.
