5G Edge Innovations for Mining

Published: 13 January 2022

5G is currently being rolled out on a broad front in Sweden and offers, in addition to higher data rates and lower delays, a completely new environment for application development where software can be placed dynamically in the cloud and closer to the end user at the edge of the network.

The project aims to develop a modern edge platform and associated portfolio of edge-conscious applications for the autonomous mine.

The project plans to work with pilot demonstrations of 5G-connected drones in a mining environment, innovative use of modern AI technology and a hardware and software stack for edge-to-cloud applications.

The project will use existing 5G test beds as well as an existing edge-to-cloud environment.

Examples of applications that will be developed include real-time video analysis, autonomous navigation, time-synchronized seismic sensors, augmented / virtual reality, etc. In addition, work is planned within network performance that takes into account the needs and requirements of end-user applications.

The project collaboration includes a university, a research institute, four innovative SMEs and two large industrial companies, all with extensive experience of related technologies and applications in the mine. This guarantees a fruitful collaboration and great opportunities for the dissemination of developed solutions among participating companies and Swedish industry in general.
