This project tries to give meaning to large amounts of recently collected measurements of the mobile cellular networks in Norrbotten.

Region Norrbotten has recently carried out a measurement campaign providing huge amounts of data on mobile coverage throughout the fourteen municipalities in the Norrbotten county. The data is available in large geo-tagged batches of measurements of received signal-strengths for various mobile network operators (Telia, Tele2, Telenor) and cellular technolgies (GSM, 3G, LTE). Beyond these measurements, GIS-data for fixed fibernetworks in Norrbotten appears to be available too.

This project carries a natural second step: the compilation and interpretation of the massive amounts of measurement data, a thorough analysis that results in nuances and quantitative conclusions about the state of Norrbottens connectivity. Where are the coverage weak spots? How does coverage quality vary across different places? How does this correlate with other social data, such as population density?

In order to address the last question we use open data sources about population, mobility and other social quantities.

Three researchers are involved in the work: Sudheesh Puthanveettil Gopi, Rickard Nilsson and Jaap van de Beek.
