Theme day with a current agenda

Published: 10 November 2014

On Wednesday a security theme day is held at the House of Science in Luleå. Organizers are People and Defence, and the unit of Political Science at Luleå University.

- This is a recurrent and very popular feature among our teachers and students. We at the political scientists unit have had the privilege to co-organize similar seminars with Folk och Försvar for many years, it's actually the ninth year in a row that we can offer the event to all interested, says Carina Lundmark assistant professor at Luleå University of Technology.

Current issues on the agenda

The issues of the theme days have varied from year to year and the theme for Wednesday's event is security, climate change and scarce resources. Questions that is to say the least important in these days.

- Recent developments with military operations for submarines in Swedish waters has clearly lifted the security policy issues higher on the agenda. We notice this especially with our students, says Carina Lundmark.

Climate issues are a regular feature

Also climate issues have been a recurring feature on the previous arrangements.

- The timing is extra good this year because the last interim report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was recently unveiled and it allows us to compare the international debate on emissions to the national discussion on measures to everything from energy efficiency to environmental levies on air and fossil-free vehicles, says Carina Lundmark.

The event is free and runs from 9:00 to 15:00 at the House of Science on Wednesday 12 November. The theme day is particularly aimed at students but anyone interested is welcome.
