Durable household research commended

Published: 26 March 2015

The project "Sustainable Household" (SHARP) that was active between the years 2003 to 2008 are praised heavily in the Environmental Protection Agency's evaluation. Areas highlighted in particular include the citation and the amount of qualitative scientific publications.

- We are very happy that we get such high marks in the evaluation. It shows that the program maintained a high scientific level, and this stimulates us to continue working on important social issues in the environmental field, says Patrik Söderholm, professor at Luleå University of Technology.

Contributed to lessons on environmental policy

The research project SHARP examined how environmental policys engages in household living, what determinates of household environmental choices and what lessons can be drawn from this for the design of future instruments. Patrik Söderholm believes that the project has contributed to a number of general and specific lessons on environmental policy.

- An important lesson was that the existence of social and personal (moral) standards, together with financial incentives play a major role in explaining enviromental behavior at the household level. At the same time, there are clear limits to how much an explicit focus on individual responsibility can achieve. Collective action, such as investments in supporting infrastructure, are therefore necessary.

High-quality social science research

Luleå University led the research program and from the university participated researchers from the following subjects: economics, political science, technology history and jurisprudence. Also researchers from Linköping University, Umeå University and Karlstad University participated in the project.

- I think that this evaluation and our role in the research show that Luleå University of Technology is an important centers for high-quality social science research on environmental, energy and natural resources, says Patrik Söderholm
